How do you hang a heavy painting

Many people love to have beautiful artwork on their walls at home. Their beauty really adds something to the appearance of the home. But what if some of your artwork is really heavy?

If you have a heavy painting to hang, the simplest way to do it is to hammer a nail into a stud and hang it. Pictures that are more than 20 lbs. Are thought to be too heavy for hanging on the wall without some reinforcement.

 
Unless you plan to consider art hanging systems in your home, here is how you can hang a heavy picture:

First, weigh the picture. A picture that is 10 lbs. Is a light load; 10-25 lbs is a medium load, and 25-50 lbs are heavy loads. Review the packaging on your wall fasteners because they usually tell you the maximum load for that hardware. Be sure that you use a fastener that can handle the load of the picture; the last thing you want is for the fastener to break.

Second, figure out the type of wall you have. Older homes from before the 1950s usually have plaster walls, while newer homes have drywall. It is also possible to hang a heavy picture on mortar, brick, and ceramic tile if you have the right tools.

Third, determine where you are hanging the picture. Find an area where you want to hang the picture and hold it against your wall. Try to hang the picture at eye level. Mark the frame’s top with a pencil or piece of tape.

Fourth, mark where you are going to nail or drill the wall fastener. Use a measuring tape to find the point on the wall where the picture should be hung. Depending on the type of frame, it may hang a bit lower on the fastener.

Fifth, add another hanging point. For more strength, think about hanging the artwork from two points. This is a good idea for a heavy painting. If the frame is hanging from a wire, use your fingers to hold it at the proper hanging point. The further apart they are, the higher the stability of the artwork will be. Measure from these points with your measuring tape to the frame’s top. Transfer the measurement to your wall with a light pencil mark.
